Sands started making large sculptural installations in abandoned buildings and squats in 1993, often using found materials, altering and referring to the spaces they inhabited. Making visually simple changes for example to the surface of the floor, Sands’ work subtly subverts the viewer's spatial expectations. Each piece of work becomes an intervention into the space it inhabits and refers to the spatial qualities and architectural characteristics of the surrounding environment.  Sands is resolutely contextual in her approach.

She graduated from Maidstone College of Art in 1986 and took her MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1987.  She undertook further study at Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin from 1989 to 1990.  She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, The Woo Foundation Award and the Herbert Read Scholarship. She has exhibited widely in both the UK and Germany.  Sands lives and works in London.
